Can women with COVID-19 breastfeed?

Yes, it's safe for both mother and the baby. Though follow mentioned precautions to minimize the risk of transmission of the virus:

  1. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after each feeding.

  2. Wear a mask while breastfeeding, if possible, to reduce the risk of respiratory droplets spreading from the mother to the baby.

  3. Consider avoiding close contact with others, including family members, for at least 14 days after giving birth, as a new mother and her baby are at higher risk for severe illness from COVID-19.

  4. If a mother is sick with COVID-19, she should take all necessary precautions to avoid spreading the virus to her baby. This may include wearing a mask while feeding and washing her hands before and after each feeding. If the mother is unable to breastfeed, she can express breast milk and have someone else feed it to the baby.

  5. Benefits of breastfeeding for both the mother and the baby far outweigh any potential risks from COVID-19.
