Japan, there's been a significant surge in Streptococcal Toxic Shock Syndrome (STSS) cases

It's caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. #STSS , which can be fatal, has seen a rise with 30% of cases ending in death. In 2024, cases are expected to surpass the previous year's record of 941, with 378 cases reported within the first two months.

GAS infections, including strep throat, are prevalent, particularly among children.

Treatment involves antibiotics, but severe cases require intensive care. The surge in STSS cases may be linked to the lifting of #COVID-19 restrictions, prompting health authorities to urge the public to reinstate preventative measures like regular hand-washing and cough etiquette.

Understanding #GASinfections is crucial for medical students, given the implications for public health.

This situation underscores the importance of vigilant infection control practices.
